The People of the State of California v. Orenthal James Simpson was a criminal trial in Los Angeles County Superior Court in which the former National Football League (NFL) broadcaster, player and actor O. J. Simpson was tried and cleared of the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. The pair were stabbed to death at the residence of Brown in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on the night of June 12 the 12th of June, 1994. The trial lasted for 11 months, from the jury's swearing-in on November 9, 1994. The opening statements were given on the 24th of January, 1995 and Simpson was acquitted of both murder counts on October 3 of the same year, despite the overwhelming evidence from the forensic side against him.The trial took place shortly following the 1992 Los Angeles riots, and it is widely believed that controversially, the defense capitalised on the anger in the city's African American community at police to convince the majority-Black jury to acquit Simpson. The trial is usually referred to as the trial of the century because of its global media coverage, and has been called the "most well-known" criminal trial in the human history.
