Jordan Ross Belfort (/'belf@rt/; born July 9, 1962) is an American businessman, speaker and author. He was a former stockbroker and criminal of the financial realm. Belfort pleaded guilty in 1999 of allegations of fraud, which included stock market manipulation and operating an office as part of a penny-stock scheme. Belfort was imprisoned for 22 months prison in connection with an agreement in which he gave testimony against numerous participants and their subordinates involved in the fraud scheme. In 2007, he wrote The Wolf of Wall Street, which was later adapted to an Martin Scorsese movie of the same title released in 2013. Leonardo DiCaprio played him in the film. Belfort was able to graduate from American University with a degree in biology. Belfort planned on using the funds earned from Loewenstern to pay for dental school. So he was accepted into The University of Maryland School of Dentistry. Belfort left the school after the director of the school announced to him his first daythat "The dental profession's golden age has come to an end. If you're in this place because you're looking to make lots of money, you're in the wrong place. Belfort's former wife Denise Lombardo and Belfort divorced when he ran Stratton Oakmont.
