David Walter Foster OC OBC (born on November 1, 1949) is a Canadian musician as a composer, arranger, record producer , and music executive who was the chairperson of Verve Records from 2012 to 2016. He has won 16 Grammy Awards from 47 nominations.His professional career in the world of music has stretched over five decades, mainly beginning as a keyboardist with the group Skylark in the early 1970s.Foster was born in Victoria, British Columbia, the son of Maurice "Maury" Foster, employed as an office worker, and Eleanor May Foster (nee Vantreight) and a homemaker.In 1963, at the age of 13 years old, he began his studies at the University of Washington music program. In 1965, he auditioned to be a band leader at the Edmonton nightclub owned by jazz musician Tommy Banks. Banks mentored Foster in jazz, composing records, as well as the music business. After a time in the United States Foster made the decision to move to Toronto to join Ronnie Hawkins. In 1966, he was a member of an alternative band to Chuck Berry. He relocated to Los Angeles in 1974 with Skylark, his band. In 1981, Foster was a producer for The Tubes' albums The Completion Backward Principle (1981) and Outside Inside (1983). Foster wrote songs such as "Talk to Ya Later", with fellow Tubes singer Fee Waybill and Steve Lukather from Toto; the Top 40 hit "Don't Want to Wait Anymore;" and the top 10 US song "She's a Beauty".
