John the Apostle (Ancient Greek Ioannes; Latin Ioannes c. 6 AD to c. 100 AD; Ge’ez: Yohhanese); or Saint John the Beloved was one of the Twelve Apostles according to the New Testament. John is usually referred to as the apostle with the youngest age. He was the son of Zebedee, and Salome. James was his brother and was one of the Twelve Apostles. The Church Fathers identify him as John the Evangelist, John of Patmos, John the Elder, and the Beloved Disciple and affirm that he lived longer than the apostles who remained and was the only one to die from natural causes, although contemporary scholars differ on the validity of these claims.John the Apostle, detail of the mosaic in the Basilica of San Vitale, Ravenna 6th century. John the Apostle is typically believed to be the writer of the Gospel of John and many Christian faiths believe that he authored several other works of the New Testament (the three Johannine epistles as well as the Book of Revelation, together with the Gospel of John are known as the Johannine works), depending on whether he is distinguished fromor associated with, John the Evangelist, John the Elder, and John of Patmos.
