Ana Lila Downs Sanchez (born 9 September 1968) is an Mexican singer-songwriter. She sings both her original compositions and those of others. She also draws inspiration from Mexican traditional and popular music. She includes indigenous Mexican influences, and has released songs in numerous indigenous languages, including Mixtec, Zapotec, Mayan, Nahuatl and Purepecha. Born and raised in Oaxaca She primarily studied at the Institute of Arts by Oaxaca and later attended the University of Minnesota, before leaving to pursue her career in music. Soon after, she began performing in the music scene that is traditional to Oaxaca City.Her debut album, Ofrenda, was released in 1994. In 1999, Downs came to prominence through her first album as a studio artist, La Sandunga, which was a commercial as well as a critical success. With Border, her debut album that was a huge success, Downs made it to the international charts in 2001. It became a smash across Latin America and Mexico in the 2000s (decade). Pecados y milagros (2011) was Downs's seventh album. It was a top album on the charts in all major markets and was a chart-topping record all over the world. The album she released in her eighth, "Balas y Chocolate" was released in 2015. "Salon Lagrimas and Deseo" is her ninth album, debuted in the year 2017.
