Earvin "Magic" Johnson Jr. (born on August 14, 1959) is an American former professional basketball player. He is often regarded as the greatest point guard of all time,[3][4][5] Johnson played 13 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). After winning championships during high school and in college, Johnson was selected first during the 1979 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, leading the team to five NBA championships during their Showtime era. Johnson was forced to retire in 1991 following the announcement that he had contracted HIV, but returned to play in the 1992 All-Star Game, winning the All-Star MVP Award. After protests from his fellow players, he decided to retire again for four years, however, in 1996, aged 36, to play in 32 games with the Lakers before retiring for the third and final time.Johnson's accomplishments in his career include three NBA MVP Awards, three NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Awards and nine NBA Finals appearances, 12 All-Star games, as well as nine All-NBA First Team selections. He led the league in assists during the regular season four times and is the NBA's all-time leading player in the average number of assists per game during both the regular season (11.19 assists per game) as well as the playoffs (12.35 assists per game). He also holds the record for the most consecutive assists in the playoffs.
