Derek Sanderson Jeter (/'dZi:t@r/ JEE-t@r, born June 26 1974) is an American former professional baseball shortstop, businessman, and executive of the baseball league. As a player, Jeter was a part of his entire 20-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career with the New York Yankees. In the year 2020, Jeter was eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame. He received 396 of 397 votes (99.75%). It is the second-highest percentage of MLB history behind Mariano Rivera and the highest number of votes by an athlete in the position. Jeter was chief executive officer (CEO) and also the owner of the league's Miami Marlins from September 2017 to February 2022.A five-time World Series champion with the Yankees, Jeter is regarded as a central contributor to the franchise's dynasty during the latter part of the 1990s and into the early 2000s, due to his striking and base-running skills, fielding and leadership. Jeter is the Yankees the all-time career top scorer in the field with hits (3465) as well as doubles (544) games (2,747), stolen bases (358) and times at the base (4,716) and plate appearances (12.602) as well as at bats (11,195).
