The People of the State of California v. Orenthal James Simpson was a criminal trial in Los Angeles County Superior Court in which former National Football League (NFL) broadcaster, player and actor O. J. Simpson was tried and acquitted for the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. On June 12th, 1994, the pair were attacked and stabbed outside Brown's Brentwood condo. The trial lasted for 11 months, beginning with the jurors' swearing-in ceremony on the 9th of November 1994. Opening statements were made by Simpson on January 24, 1995. Simpson was found not innocent of the murder charges on the 3rd October 1995, despite the overwhelming evidence. The trial was held shortly following the 1992 Los Angeles riots, and it is agreed that, in a controversial way, the defense capitalized on the anger among the city's African-American community towards police, thereby convincing that the majority of the jury was Black to disqualify Simpson. The trial is frequently referred to as the"trial of the century" due to the international media attention it received, and is called the "most well-known" criminal trial in the human history.
