Jo Raquel Welch (nye Tejada, September 5, 1940) was an American actress from the United States. She first gained attention for her performance in Fantastic Voyage (1966), and was then offered an acting contract by 20th Century Fox. They granted her contract to Hammer Film Productions in Britain and she was featured in One Million Years B.C. (1966). Even though she only had three lines of dialogue in the film, images of her in the bikini that she was wearing became the most popular posters that turned her into an international sex icon. Later, she appeared in Bedazzled (1967), Bandolero! (1968), 100 Riffles (1969), Myra Breckinridge (70), and Hannie Caulder (71). Welch was the star of numerous variety shows on television. Her performance of powerful women characters made her break out from the mold of the traditional sex symbol. Her rise to fame in the late 1960s is responsible for ending Hollywood's aggressive advertising of blondes as bombshells.
